To illustrate this dynamic nature of the human-canine relationship, we propose a biopsychosocial model of the relationship between a human and a dog (Figure 1). In this model, our prior conceptualization of health as a dynamic property of the human-canine relationship has been expanded to also include the psychological state of the human and the biological state of the dog. This biopsychosocial approach of viewing health is not entirely new, as this model has been used to understand the interaction between humans and other species including plants, animals, and humans [for an early exemplar see (34)].

The model in Figure 1 shows the relationship between the human and the dog as a dynamic and evolving system where social, psychological, and biological factors influence one another over time. The human and the dog experience a series of similar influences (e.g., good food, exercise, socialization) throughout their lifespans that stimulate physiological changes in the brain and body. In response to these external influences, the dog and the human exhibit different psychological and biological states. These states may in turn influence one another (e.g., if the dog is experiencing anxiety and therefore is less responsive to the human or if the human is feeling overwhelmed by the dog) so that these states are either reinforced or disrupted over time.

In this model, the dog influences the human over the lifespans of both species through the way it interacts with the human as well as the way it is influenced by the human. For example, as shown in Figure 1, the dog may affect the human through its experiences (e.g., being scolded for jumping on the table), influences (e.g., food), and activities (e.g., play). In turn, the human may affect the dog through external influences (e.g.
