The utility of integrated aerosol samples for CC analysis has been demonstrated. While thin sections are attractive for their degree of accuracy, the ability to access and characterize aerosol compounds from the bulk solid matrices of aps within meteorites facilitates recovery of most CCs present in meteorites on a solute basis for both gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The bulk solid affords higher signal and broader analytical coverage and metabolomics rarely contains representative data for the bulk solid material. The capability for routine CC analysis of heavy plasma residues also allows for the first time the consideration of isotopic data within bulk solid samples
CCs offer a direct path to exploring the chemical and physical environment present in the solar nebula. To identify organic compounds, the bulk solid is ground and extracted with solvent and preferably directly analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Once these compounds are confirmed, there is no need to replicate the synthesis experiments that produced them. The organic compounds present in meteorites should be directly analogous to the biochemistry of the solar nebula, including the original zirconium silicate mineral phases (e.g., Owens et al. 1981). For these reasons, the extraction procedure for CC studies is similar to that for paleogenic organic analysis, with minor modifications for the size of CC particles and other mineral phases d2c66b5586
