Flight of Icarus (the OAV which had the infamous It's The Great Satan attempt at censorship, not the awesome movie that kinda sorta happened 21 years later), I love this movie more than anything in anime. For simply a movie, it really does a good job of making us take a step back and really take in just how good it is. It is stuff like this that we need more of. In addition, the enhanced edition DVD with the OVA Immortan Joe's Quest is just a pantsload of fun. It's full of great animation for all the action scenes, a cool nature simulating episode that uses the 3D to great effect, and even a scene all about what a bunch of future people will say when they see all the blood in this movie. Though if you're trying to get Gant-sensei for Teru-sensei, speaking some Japanese well enough to avoid using the blood is kind of important, right?
Military, this one is reserved for the Urusei Yatsura fans. Even though the cartoony feel to most of the animation and comedy in this movie is great, this one changes pace to take you through a military story that is possibly the most realistic anime/manga sequence I've ever seen. It doesn't feel like anything in Hayao Miyazaki's film, Ghibli's, or even even the Miyazaki of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. This is simply a story about the horrors of war with a boy who has had everything taken away from him, but whose still manages to pull his own wits to thwart the sheer fear and power of his enemies.
This one is so old and dated, it's embarrassing. If this HARDLY fits in with the Anime Movie section (which, by the way, is now updated), that's just sad. This is actually a proper movie, it can be watched by (with a little effort) all audiences it was targeted at, and it's one of the most visceral viewing experiences I've ever had. Just looking at the title and image above will forewarn you of what you're in for.
