The game was initially intended to be an X game, an idea which was largely abandoned. The game was heavily inspired by the Mega Man X games, most notably X4. The project was first announced on the Mega Man X4 forums. The project's developer, Zong Hui, had originally planned to do a Mega Man game using the Unreal Engine, with Sony Computer Entertainment providing financial support for the project. However, after learning how to use Visual C++, he switched to the XEngine, which is what is featured in Street Fighter X Mega Man. Zong Hui intended to make the game from the perspective of Mega Man in order to show off the XEngine, which was released as a free download on December 17, 2012.
Street Fighter X Mega Man is inspired by Capcom's arcade game Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, which was released in 1992. It is also based on the Mega Man X series, first introduced in 1991. The game is set on a desert planet that is also a portal to the other dimensions. The player begins by fighting aliens on the surface. The player begins in the costume of Mega Man X. After defeating a boss, the player is teleported to the city of Dr. Wily. The player must fight Wily's robots and his daughter, who is in league with him, in order to defeat Wily. The player progresses through the levels, fighting robots and Wily's minions, until he finally faces Wily himself. The player then fights him to gain control of the portal and escape.
Street Fighter X Mega Man is a rare case of a fan project, which has gained the approval of the original game's creators and has been legally released. Capcom has stated that it is aware of the project, but makes no judgement on its quality. Street Fighter X Mega Man is a point and click action game, with the player controlling Mega Man and playing as him in a side-scrolling platformer. Mega Man can move forward, back, and jump, and can even enter special moves and perform his charge shot by pressing a button. The player can also use Ryu's move sets, such as his back-dash. Characters from both franchises have appeared; Ryu and Ken from the Street Fighter series and Mega Man, Shadow Man, Bass, and Proto Man from the Mega Man series.
