There are only two nits with scanscore, like the last comment. I like the automation and it's interface. I didn't like how you couldn't save the scorable result as a musicxml file, but they have an option for a musicxml export, so if you use that, you can capture your work.
I've tried scanscore, bortolotti, a few others, and yes, it was painful. I found that if I massaged the music into shapes I could not accurately reproduce (especially on the 2nd or 3rd try), then the import was easy. This was the most accurate way to import.
I have been using playscore (on ipad) so far, but now bought scanscore because I thought that it did a better job when testing scanning some score. The trial version doesn't let you safe the result to musicxml as already mentioned, so I bought the ensemble version to do further tests (there is a 30 day money back guarantee).

I found the problem and it seems to be an issue with the'stylus' and 'pen' tools. Both tools use the stylus to play notes, and the pen is used to modify notes. The problem is that the stylus and pen are not working properly on my ipad, so the stylus and pen always produce a 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, - - - repeat of notes. I am not sure if it is an issue of the program or the stylus and pen. I have contacted the company and they have been very responsive. It should be fixed in the next update.
The tune I tried with scanscore was from a book that I recently did a book cover for. It came out very nicely and I was happy with the results, but it was not perfect. I was able to use the file with the scanscore and got most of the notes read correctly, but some of the notes didn't read. It was pretty weird.
I'm going to try to contact the developer of Scanscore and see if they will send me a copy of the MusicXML file they converted to get it working. If that doesn't work, I'll try making one myself. 827ec27edc
