Silbermann was conscious of the high standing his work commanded in Saxon society. On the suggestion of the Elector of Saxony, George Frederick III of the House of Hanover, his workshop received 200 guilders per month and the right to use his name. As he was not interested in the immediate financial rewards of his work, he reduced his remuneration to a one-fifth share of his wholedale, in order to give his employees more time to work on charitable projects. Silbermann was a devout Lutheran and key member of the Gymnasium am Orgelkreuz at Dresden, having received a full education in Greek, Latin and Hebrew, and more than twenty years of experience in the craft of organ building. He is mentioned by the president of the Royal Academy of Arts in Dresden, Georg Listing, in the latter's description of an altar grand that had been finished in his workshop for the Zeitz Cathedral in 1713.
The Historical Concert Grand is placed in a dramatic space, right at the entrance to the cathedral. It has an impressive counter sandstone organ frame and an octagonal case decorated with ten prominent figures. The registries are made from mahogany with ebony dampers and keys, and all of the case pipes are in round-bore. The stops have traditionally been placed at the front near the audience. The tubular keywork is supplied by Thomas Obermair.
Silbermann's great innovation was the damper lifting mechanism, a beautiful and very effective method of expanding the reserved sound spectrum for each instrument. The effect is the combination of a greater tonal range and an overall stronger sound. Posições A: The main dampers are lifted from their positions into the Dampplatz, and stop the pipe steady in the middle register. Posições O: The main dampers are placed on one of five hinged auxiliary dampers. The hinged dampers are set to a stop on the pipes, and the auxiliary dampers are lifted from their positions into the Dampplatz, causing the stops in this church/church-like machinery to be momentarily locked into action on the pipe. d2c66b5586
